CHALLENGE THE RETINAL IMPERATIVE – VERSIONS is a changing text montage, a container of meaning in book form and a multiple perspective.
The text is composed of 279 text fragments from 37 writers and artists. The fragments are permanently rearranged through computer scripts – they exist as a dynamic, relational setting.
Among others, VERSIONS deals with a critique of authorship which firmly rejects the concept of the romantic, ingenious artist. That’s why there is no uniform variant of the text but a huge number of different, non-hierarchical versions. This book is its variation.
With the same scripts, which organize the fragments, it’s possible to generate digital drawings. Therefore every book is also a picture which can tell something about its sctructure and the connections beyond it.
The idea of inter-text is fundamental. Every text consists of many voices originating from other texts which of course are their inter-text and so on and so forth.
Entangled thinking and writing is a realistic approach in the sense that reality is entangled and dynamically extending towards the infinite. Realistic writing must stress its own existence and refuse a strict relation between sign and meaning.
VERSIONS is a tank and a suggestion to rethink the term of artistic practice in a pluralistic form.
CHALLENGE THE RETINAL IMPERATIVE – VERSIONS ist eine sich verändernde Textmontage, ein Container und Bedeutungsraum in Buchform, eine multiple Perspektive. Der Text besteht aus 279 appropriierten Textfragmenten von 37 Autorinnen und Künstlern. Diese Fragmente werden mit Hilfe von Computerscripts permanent neu geordnet und rekontextualisiert – sie existieren ausschliesslich in einem dynamischen, relationalen Setting.
VERSIONS ist unter anderem eine Kritik an Autorenschaft, bei der es um die Ablehnung des romantisch-genialen Künstlerbildes geht. Deshalb existiert keine einheitliche Form von VERSIONS, nur eine Vielzahl von nicht-hierarchischen Varianten – der Text ist seine Varianz.
Mit Hilfe der Scripts lässt sich VERSIONS als Bild darstellen. Jedes Buch ist also auch ein Bild, das über seine Struktur und die darüber hinausgehende Vernetzung berichten kann.
Die Vorstellung von Inter-Text ist grundlegend in diesem Projekt. Jeder Text besteht aus vielen Stimmen anderer Texte, welche selbst Inter-Texte sind.
Dynamisch zu schreiben ist der Versuch, der Komplexität und Verschränktheit der Realität zu begegnen, in der und für die Realität Kunst zu machen. Realistisches Schreiben muss die totalitäre Beziehung Zeichen-Bedeutung ablehnen und die eigene Existenz strapazieren. VERSIONS ist ein Tank und die Idee, das künstlerische Werk plural zu denken.
